"Design Thinking". A term that has been thrown around by speedy start-ups, design agencies and all the way to large corporates, everyone claims to be doing “it”, so much so that it has pretty much lost its meaning. When done right Design Thinking enables you to think more strategically and tackle large, complex challenges. It teaches you to recognise where you are in the design process and which tools reach for to move forward. It’s a proven and repeatable methodology that combines creative and critical thinking to provide a structure to solve a whole range of problems. But there's also a suboptimal way to use designing thinking, it usually involves a flurry of post-it notes that go nowhere - we’ll discuss avoid that too.

Following a brief introduction to Design Thinking and it’s core principles, designer & strategist Alex Durussel-Baker of Korero Studio will take participants through a full cycle of applying Design Thinking tools and processes to a given brief.

With a bias towards action, this fast-paced workshop will teach you the fundamentals of Design Thinking; including methods for rapidly building empathy for your target user, generating solutions and tools for synthesis and decision making - all of which can be applied to advance your work, life and interests.

    What will be covered?

    • What is Design Thinking and why should I care?
    • Learn a process you can apply to any problem
    • Learn how to recognise when and why you are stuck in a project and what to do about it
    • Learn basics of insight gathering, visual thinking and how to have a prototyping mindset
    • How to develop innovative products and services by keeping your target’s needs at the centre of your creative process
    Learning Outcomes

You'll leave the session able to:

    • Identify the design thinking process and and feel confident discussing the key stages
    • Interpret challenges using Design Thinking problem framing methods
    • Practice taking a user-centred approach when developing solutions
    Who are your hosts?

Alex is a certified Design Sprint coach and an award-winning UX designer with a track record developing innovative business models and products. With a background in startups and agency design, she founded Korero Studio a design collective that’s all about getting teams unstuck, working better together and helping them test audacious ideas to grow their business.

A keen facilitator, Alex specialised in delivering design thinking and strategic workshops for businesses and individuals in the early phases of their product or service. Welcome to FutureGaze, a series of conversations providing time out to reflect and gaze into the future of the creative industries.

    >> REGISTER HERE <<

FutureGaze is a new lunchtime series brought to you by Creative Edinburgh, providing time out to reflect and gaze into the future of the creative industries.

In conversation with Caroline Parkinson, we'll welcome creative leaders who have innovated and led significant changes in their creative business and artistic practice over the past year to share what the future looks like for them - and for the creative and cultural sector.

As our industry reacts to this pivotal moment, be part of the conversation as we collectively gaze into the future of the creative and cultural sector, stimulate ideas for your creative future, and get inspired to strive towards it.

    What does FutureGaze explore?

From new modes of working and responding to the changes in clients and audiences, to new artistic practice and embracing innovative technologies, FutureGaze will cover a range of themes that impact creative freelancers, sole traders and businesses.

Joined by a line up from across the creative industries, Caroline will delve into the radical shifts in thinking and practice they've made over the last year and explore what's been learned through these changes.

We will reflect on how clients and audiences may have changed and how they think the sector may need to adapt, and we will share the innovations they have developed or harnessed to facilitate change and what’s on the horizon, ready to drive forward their work into a sustainable future.
